I was considering using the search keywords passed in the referrer string to "seed" a search on our site and instead of a generic homepage that would serve up a page of search results for the term that the user searched on to get to the site in the first place. I think this is baseless: I think doing this would *add* value to the Search Engine and to our site - but it's a matter of interpretation I suppose.
And if someone at a search engine interprets this to be cloaking then I can see the risk. Can anyone comment on this ? |

Cloaking is showing one page to the search engine and another page to the visitors. Since the visitor would see the same page if they entered in the same URL(www.website.xxx/) directly, it's not cloaking.
But if someone clicks on a link for www.website.xxx and you take the keyword from the referrer string and use that to show them search results, I think it is something between cloaking and not cloaking. Using something in the referrer to display content is not something I think I have heard of before, but is an interesting idea. I would not think it was practical, since a page would get many different referrers. Still, if you look for "q=" for example, you could use this to show them what they were looking for on Google. I think it's not a bad idea, but it's a matter of how many visitors are going to hit your site with that kind of referrer string that you can use? |

Hi,
If you are going to ask a question that has nothing to do with the thread, you should really start a new thread of your own and ask there. :-) I think you are new to forums and you will want to read the rules of any forum you visit and do a little reading first so you know how things are done. This is my first tip because participating in forums is a really good way to promote your site, but not by posting about it. Most forums do not allow advertising except in special areas and they don't allow self-promotion for the most part. But if you have good information to share and ask or answer questions people will notice and visit your site from your signature, like the one you have. But most forums also do not allow affiliate links like you have, so you will have to make sure you read the rules for each forum. This forum allows affiliate links, I think, but they don't give a good impression, since you are not promoting "your" site, but someone else's. :-) Anyway, the other suggestion is to learn about search engine optimization. This is one of the most cost-effective ways to get traffic and anyone can do it, but it depends on the person's ability and time. I would just avoid anything you hear that talks about "getting tons of traffic to your site" since while it may work, the traffic generally is not looking for or does not care about what your site offers and just leaves right away. |
