The article here is exactly on point.

Choosing a generic name will impact your bottom line. Everything from a marketing standpoint and from an SEO it only makes sense to think about what domain name to choose.

I personally have choosen currently to "BRAND" my own name its really long in my opinion and does not fit the model. I think if you do something on purpose like I have with the name you had better have a few ways of promoting and getting traffic to your site.

Generic will always win big. Looking at trends is also important. I have just picked up some premium .tv extension including:

Anna
Honeymoon
Niagara

I would suggest that they are good domains.
Anna = anna nicole smith
Honeymooon = something married couples do
Niagara = Niagara Falls Canada/ USA will always be there.

Now its all about creating websites around generic names. . . . .
